Goodwill

What is a goodwill?

That part of the purchase price for a company which exceeds the value of the tangible and intangible assets of that company after deducting debts. Goodwill is paid, for example, because the buyer considers the earnings prospects of the target company to be particularly positive or because it attaches value to the company name, which is not recognized in the balance sheet.
